School to be canceled, train service increased after bridge collapse
November 8th, 2012 (InsideCostaRica.com) Authorities have decided to cancel classes on Friday and Monday for several school districts as a result of the Bailey bridge collapse on the General Canas Highway on Tuesday afternoon. They say they are taking the measure as those two days usually see an even greater spike in vehicular traffic.
Classes will be cancelled in the districts of Merced, Catedral, El Carmen, Uruca, Pavas, Distrito Hospital (near Hospital Mexico) and Mata Redonda, as well as Escazu, Santa Ana, and Tibas in San Jose.
In Heredia, classes will be suspended in downtown Heredia, Santo Domingo, San Pablo and Belen. Alajuela will also be cancelling classes.
The Government will also be extending the train service schedule in an attempt to lessen vehicular traffic.
Miguel Carabaguiaz, director of the Costa Rican Railroad Institute (INCOFER, in Spanish), said, “We are going to (extend) the service by providing more frequent trips in the mornings and afternoons, which is when people commute most, for example the trains from Heredia-San Jose will be providing morning service until 10 am, whereas in the afternoon, more service will be provided for the Heredia-San Jose service, which will be extended until 8:30 pm.”
Meanwhile, the Public Works and Transportation Ministry (MOPT), National Road Security Council (CONAVI), and the construction company in charge say they will continue to work around the clock. Their goal is to have traffic flowing by next Tuesday, November 13th.
According to Pedro Castro, minister of MOPT, they have opened an investigation in order to determine the responsibility of the company which owns the crane truck which hit a guard rail on the bridge, which, combined with its weight, resulted in its collapse.
