Ticos more concerned about unemployment, threat of job loss

November 7^th 2012 (InsideCostaRica.com) Costa Ricans are almost as concerned with losing their job as they are by the risk of being robbed, as unemployment comes close to becoming the main concern in the minds of Costa Ricans.

The last survey carried out by Unimer revealed that 21% of the respondents consider unemployment their biggest concern, while 25% consider the country’s security situation their top concern.

Both indicators have been coming closer to one another in the past year and a half. A year and a half ago, 50% of Ticos were most concerned with the lack of security, whereas 12% were most concerned with unemployment.

Today, after 5 similar surveys, insecurity concerns have decreased as other concerns enter Costa Rican’s minds.

In the 1^st quarter of 2012, the unemployment rate in the country reached 10.4%, demonstrating that although the Costa Rican economy is growing, not enough jobs are being generated for those who need them.  The unemployment rate in 2010 was 8.6%.

The 3^rd place national problem in the minds of Costa Ricans is the high living cost (12.5%), and corruption comes in 4^th place (11.5%).

Following security and unemployment, the 3^rd largest concern of those polled is the high cost of living (12.5%), followed by corruption in 4^th place with 11.5% of respondents saying those issues are their top concerns.

Those most concerned about losing their jobs are women and young people between the ages of 25 and 29, and those without professional education.
