Only 35% of Ticos satisfied with Costa Rican democracy
November 5th, 2012 (InsideCostaRica.com) Although Costa Rica is recognized for being one of the most solid and stable democracies in the American continent, only 35% of the citizens are satisfied with its political system, and 22% believes a dictatorial type of Government would be a positive idea, according to a survey that was published on Sunday.
The survey, which was carried out by Unimer for the local newspaper, La Nacion, reveals that the group that defends the Costa Rican way of government has decreased considerably in the past 6 years. In 2006, 55% of Costa Ricans said they were “very satisfied” with their local political system.
During that same period, the percentage of people who believe that democracy is preferable to any other type of government, also decreased, from 78% in 2006 to 57% this year.
In 2006, only 11% of those polled believed a dictatorship was a good idea, whereas today the percentage has grown to 22%.
The support of local institutions also decreased in the last 6 years, from 54% to 36% today. Today, 40% of respondents believe that democracy will not resolve the country’s problems. In 2006, only 12% believed this.
The survey was carried between October 3rd and 11th, in which 1,200 people from the entire country were interviewed. According to the polling firm, it has a 95% confidence level and a margin of error of 2.8%.
