Desamparados gets a hospital
November 2nd, 2012 (InsideCostaRica.com) After many years of residents petitioning the government for a hospital of their own due to the size of the city, the residents of Desamparados have finally received what they’ve been asking for.
The 525,000 inhabitants of Desamparados have a new “intermediate hospital”, the Marcial Fallas Diaz Comprehensive Health Assistance Center (CAIS, in Spanish).
The medical center, which is located next to the Marcial Fallas Diaz Clinic, will be offering labor and delivery services, as well as some low impact surgeries and an observation room as of Monday.
Patients from Desamparados, Aserri, Acosta and Corralillo (in Cartago), will benefit from the new hospital, which expects to attend 3,000 low risk deliveries per year, as well as 500 monthly surgeries.
The CAIS measures 5,200 square meters and cost CCSS 7 billion colones (about $14 million) to construct.
It has three floors with capacity for 67 hospital beds for transitional hospitalization, low risk births, ambulatory surgeries, and emergency services.
The hospital is expecting to add specialists in gynecology, pediatrics, anesthesiology, and family medicine in 2013.
