The new Turrubares bridge

October 28th, 2012 (InsideCostaRica.com) – The residents of Turrubares have a new bridge that crosses the Tarcoles River, which connects the town with Orotina.

On October 22nd, 2009 a bus with 38 passengers on board fell into the river below, as the suspension bridge that crossed this section of the Tarcoles River collapsed.

The President of Costa Rica, Laura Chinchilla, said that the new bridge commemorates the five people who lost their lives in the accident, and celebrates the lives of those who survived.

Jose Luis Salas, director of COSEVI (National Road Security Council), stated that the new bridge, which cost 2 billion colons (about $4 million), is part of an investment initiative to repair the country’s bridges.

The new bridge has two lanes, and a span of 125 meters.

After the 2009 bridge collapse, The General District Attorney requested an investigation of the ex-minister Karla Gonzalez.  The charges against her were dropped this year. The accident occurred after various reports were filed, warning of the dire condition of the bridge.
