October 17th, 2012 – The Marchamo is an annual road tax and insurance payment, which is also linked to the “Riteve” vehicle inspection. Those who do not have their Riteve current, can not obtain their Marchamo.

As the time comes to pay the Marchamo for 2013, authorities announced that many drivers still owe the Marchamo for this year.

According to information from the National Insurance Institute (INS), motorcyclists and owners of special equipment are the ones who are most in arrears. The total amount that has not yet been collected is approximately 4 billion colones, or about $8 million dollars.

According to the law, vehicle owners had until December 31st, 2011, to pay the 2012 Marchamo. All payments made after that date, must be paid with additional late fees.

Those who do not pay the Marchamo are subject to penalties that are stipulated in the Traffic Law, such as the confiscation of license plates or the vehicle itself.
