Prison riot in La Reforma

October 14th, 2012 – At approximately 10:00 a.m. yesterday, a confrontation between several inmates, presumably from different gangs, caused a riot in the national prison called “La Reforma.”

One person died and two were wounded by a sharp weapon.

According to Maricel Rodriguez, spokesperson for the Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ), the injured men were transferred to the San Rafael de Alajuela Hospital, where one of the men passed away.

Reinaldo Villalobos, Social Adaptation sub-director, said the voilence occurred in section B, in the minimum-security area. He also stated that the situation was under control, and Fuerza Publica had surrounded the jail perimeter.

“We are evaluating the situation, apparently it was a riot, in which several men were injured, one very badly,“ said Villalobos.

According to Fernando Ferraro, Justice Minister, the riot occurred during a routine inspection.

Fernando Ferraro, Justice Minister, said that this type of violence is the result of overpopulation in prisons, as well as inmates desire to control drugs and other illicit activities in the prison.

Inside Costa Rica reported on the severe overcrowding situation at La Reforma on Friday.
