PAC Party Makes Political History Tomorrow

Tomorrow, Sunday, May 31, will be a historic day in the politics of Costa Rica, when the Partido Acción Ciudadana (PAC), created in 2000, will hold its first open convention to choose their candidate for the 2010 presidential elections.

Ottón Solís, the founder of the party and candidate in the last two presidential elections, will square off against Epsy Campbell and Román Macaya.

All three candidates are confident that they will win the nomination vote and have a full agenda today leading up to the opening of the voting tomorrow morning.

Solís, who came within a small margin of votes against Oscar Arias in 2006, agreeing to opening the election of the party leadership to a public vote, feels he has more to offer the party and Costa Ricans that the other contenders.

Epsy will wake up tomorrow morning in her native town of Limón, where she feels she has the greatest support for her candidacy. He will later in the day return to San Jose for the closing of voting.

Román Macaya, the long shot, is expected to be on the campaign trail all day, seeking out votes.

The 411 voting booths open at 8am and close at 4pm. Results of the vote are expected to be announced by 6pm, after being counted and scrutinized by an internal party elections board.

Some 100.000 people are expected to take part in the party's first public convention.
