Rafael Correa defended the initiative to
assess teachers, and announced a state of
emergency could be decreed in the sector to
face detractors of the process.
After reiterating last night that his
government advocates excellent education
services, Correa criticized a sector of the
National Teachers' Union (UNE) for
boycotting the examination of educators in
Costa region.
The government will not hesitate to take all
the necessary measures to protect the
Ecuadorian education system, Correa said
from the Carondelet Palace.
He even mentioned the possibility of
declaring a state of emergency in the sector
for teachers to undergo the tests, which
could reveal problems in the teaching plan.
Excellent education services can only be
achieved with well prepared and remunerated
teachers, he said.
Correa reminded of the significant wage
increase approved for educators in the last
three years.
However, he noted, when it was agreed to
begin this week a serious examination
process, one CNE sector began boycotting the
action.
Correa also announced that he signed a
decree Monday stipulating the dismissal of
professors who do not take the tests in 30
days.
