Colombian
President May Not Stay On In
Job
Colombian President Alvaro Uribe has been
reconsidering whether to stand for a third
term of office.
Last week the Colombian parliament approved
a referendum on increasing the maximum time
in office for a president.
A new maximum term of office has yet to be
formulated by parliament and would need to
be ratified by the Constitutional Court.
The presidential term currently stands at
two four-year terms.
President Uribe, speaking to reporters said
he regarded a third term might be
inconvenient for him and said he did not
want younger politicians thinking he was
clinging on to power.
But he did not rule out standing for
re-election in 2010.
