Santiago de Chile - Electronic public
health and education systems represent the
most efficient, effective and equal form of
services, pointed out here the Economic
Commission for Latin America and the
Caribbean (ECLAC).
In an official statement on the World Day of
the Telecommunications and the Information
Society, the United Nations organization
highlights its potential to improve the
coverage, to save costs, to broadcast
medical alerts, distance-teaching and speed
up diagnoses.
It also insists on the need to increase the
use and access to the information and the
communications technologies (ICT), to
qualify the users and generate applications
and contents.
In public health, the ICT facilitates the
diffusion of medical and sanitary
information in real time. They facilitate
quicker and more precise diagnoses, from
clinics in connected rural towns to
hospitals with specialized equipment.
For professionals, they facilitate a wider
access to formative information and medical
data of patients via the Electronic Clinical
History.
The use of hospital information systems
reduces times of answer and speeds up the
exchange of information that in cases of
transplants, for example, can make the
difference between life and death.
In education, it is possible to incorporate
the ICT to teaching and learning processes
and also the administration of educational
centers.
When taking the ICT to the classrooms, the
students have access to more information,
allowing professors to offer more attractive
classes.
To improve the use and access to ICTs in
education and public health is the priority
of the Plan of Regional Action for the
Information Society in Latin America and the
Caribbean (ELAC2010), for which the ECLAC is
a Technical Secretary.
