Carlos Fernando Chamorro Wins European
Journalism Prize; is Profiled in NYT
Nicaraguan journalist Fernando Chamorro, who
has recently faced persecution from the
government of Daniel Ortega, is the subject
of a lengthy article in the New York Times
Magazine. He was also named the winner of
the Casa América Catalunya Prize for Freedom
of Expression in Ibero-America. He will
receive the prize May 5 in Barcelona.
Chamorro is the son of former President
Violeta Chamorro and Pedro Joaquín Chamorro,
the editor of La Prensa newspaper killed in
1978 during the dictatorship of Anastasio
Somoza.
The journalist, 53, runs a weekly
newsletter, Confidencial, and the top-rated
“Esta Semana" (This Week) investigative
magazine TV show, which is controversial for
its investigations of government corruption
and cronyism, Tina Rosenberg writes for the
NYT Magazine.
“If you are an independent journalist in a
country in which independent journalism is
seen as a danger to those in power, you
sometimes cross a line from reporting the
news to being the news. That is what is
happening to Carlos Fernando Chamorro,”
