Residents Call For Resignation of AyA Head
Over Excessive Water Utility Bills
For Ricardo Sancho, the president of the
Instituto Costarricense de Acueductos y
Alcantarillados (AyA), Thursday may have
been one of the worst days of his career,
when a group of disgruntled customers took
him, what appeared, hostage in the AyA
offices in Sardinal, Guanacaste, upset over
their current water bill.
Sancho was in Sardinal to inaugurate the El
Coco - Ocotal aqueduct construction.
The area residents where unhappy with the
recent method applied by the water and sewer
utility in calculating water bills, shouting
insults at the utility chief, the government
and public institutions.
Sancho told the press that at no time did he
feel threatened or felt being held against
his will inside the offices of the AyA,
rather, taking the time to talk to his
customers and his officials.
The AyA president added that he was not
delayed in his programmed activities for the
day, making his 2:30 appointment in La cruz,
following the mid day incident.
The residents were mainly upset for being
charged elevated amounts due to leaks and
problems when introducing a new aqueduct
system in an area.
