Salvadorians Honor Archbishop Romero
San Salvador - Salvadorian priests and
numerous parishioners will attend on Tuesday
a mass to pay homage to Monsignor Oscar
Arnulfo Romero, on the 29th anniversary of
his assassination by death squads.
The religious ceremony will take place at
the Metropolitan Cathedral in this capital,
presided over by San Salvador Archbishop
Jose Luis Escobar.
On Saturday, they began the activities to
honor Romero, who is an emblematic symbol of
the struggle for peace, justice and national
unity.
Displays of respect at the Cathedral's
crypt, where the religious leader's remains
are kept, include ceremonies at the Divina
Providencia hospital, where he was
assassinated by a sniper on March 24, 1980,
and masses in different parish churches in
the country.
The homage also includes talks until March
27, promoted by the Monseñor Romero
Foundation, to share knowledge about the
prominent religious man's life and work and
the relations he maintained with young
people in the '80s.
Archbishop Escobar requested, during
Sunday's mass at the Cathedral in this city,
to pray for Romero's canonization, a process
currently studied within the Congregation
for the Cause of All Saints, in the Vatican.
Born in April 1942, Romero accomplished his
mission as archbishop of San Salvador,
starting in 1977, in times when the country
was being shaken by a serious social and
political crisis, thus from his homilies, he
denounced violence and outrages against
people, perpetrated by the military officers
that were leading the country. |
