to ICJ Report On Maritime Border Dispute
With Chile
Lima - Peru on Thursday presented a report
on its maritime border dispute with Chile to
the Hague-based International Court of
Justice, Peruvian Foreign Ministry said.
Peruvian ambassador Allan Wagner, who
delivered the report, said he thinks Chile
will not consider the move as a hostile act.
"There are resolutions from the United
Nations that establish the court as a place
to solve a controversy, it is a legitimate
move and must be considered as a good-will
gesture instead of a negative measure,"
Wagner said.
The document includes the mapping and legal
support of Peru's demand to Chile to return
38,000 km of sea in the Pacific Ocean,
Peruvian Foreign Minister Jose Garcia
Belaunde said on March 10.
Garcia said that after Peru delivers the
report, Chile has one year to present its
bases and the ruling will be given around
2016.
In January 2008, Peru began a lawsuit in The
Hague, asking the court to solve the
controversy the country has with Chile on
their maritime borders
Chile insists it does not have pending
complaints with Peru and that the maritime
borders were established in agreements
signed in1952 and 1954. But Peru argues that
those are not border demarcation deals but
fishing agreements.
Chilean President Michelle Bachelet said
Thursday that Chile "has been notified
through the international court of justice
that the Peruvian has delivered a report on
the conterminous issues."
"Mainly my messages is of calm; we are
prepared; we know we are right; we are
working hard," she said during an official
visit to India.
