Venezuela Offers to Strengthen Ties With El
Salvador
Caracas = Venezuelan President Hugo
Chavez said Tuesday he is ready to
strengthen ties with El Salvador, after
left-wing candidate Mauricio Funes won the
presidential elections on Sunday.
"Bilateral relations proposals and regional
integration with El Salvador could only be
made after Mauricio Funes takes office,"
Chavez told official TV chain Venezolana de
Television (VTV).
"It is too early to adventure, and we must
be prudent. The main thing was that we
succeeded in the elections (of El Salvador)
with the truth," Chavez made the remarks
after a meeting with his ministers in the
Miraflores Palace.
On Monday, Chavez said Funes' victory
consolidated the historical tendency (of
Socialism), which in the first 10 years of
the 21st Century has been rising in all
Latin American and the Caribbean
(countries)."
The victory of Funes, who is from the
Farabundo Marti Front of National Liberation
(FMLN), halted the right-wing's 20
consecutive years of rule in El Salvador.
Funes has received congratulations from some
Latin American countries. He will take
office on June 1, 2009 for a five-year term.
