President Lula: Brazil Will Continue To Grow

Rio de Janeiro - President Luiz Inacio Lulada Silva said Monday his country will continue to grow despite facing financial turbulence that it did not create.

"While most rich countries dive into a recession, Brazil will keep on growing," Lulu said. "In 2009, we will grow less than we would have liked to, and less than we could have if not for this external crisis. But we will grow."

During a business seminar in New York City, Lula said that the crisis represents an opportunity for world leaders, and one which has challenged Brazil to work harder.

"This crisis came to tease me, to challenge me, and will give me more motivation to do more than it had been done before," Lula said.

He said Brazil did not undergo the severe crisis of confidence that swept the rich countries because its economy was in order by the time the crisis came up.

Lula stressed that he remains optimistic about Brazil's prospects for the future but that does not mean, however, that he is unaware of the seriousness and the importance of the crisis effects. He said Brazil and China currently are the most attractive countries for investments.

Additionally, Lula criticized Morgan Stanley Bank's projection for Brazil's growth in 2009, which was recently reviewed from zero growth to 4.5 percent shrinkage.

"These banks did not get it right about their own situation, let alone Brazil's situation," he said.
