Caracas - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez
announced on Sunday the central government
will retake the administration of the
country's ports and airports from state
governments.
"We are going to recover all the ports and
airports of the Republic, no matter who is
against it," Chavez said during a regular TV
and radio program "Alo president," which is
broadcasted by official channels and
stations.
He said the measure is for national security
and ordered Defense Minister Ramon
Carrizalez and the Military High Command to
execute it immediately.
The measure is based on the revised Organic
Law of Decentralization, Delimitation and
Competence Transfer of the Public Power,
whose amendment was approved on March 12.
The president ordered the Venezuelan
Bolivarian National Army to occupy next week
the facilities of Maracaibo, Puerto Caballo
and Porlamar Ports, which respectively
belong to the states of Zulia, Carabobo and
Porlamar, all controlled by right wing
politicians.
"Those are strategic facilities and they are
not of any national chieftain or mafia,"
Chavez said.
