Salvador FMLN for Peaceful Vote
San Salvador - The FMLN presidential
candidate Mauricio Funes called on the El
Salvador population to avoid violence and
make the Sunday elections a true civic
festivity.
We will not allow provocations and we will
keep calm. For us the elections are an
historical opportunity of the people to have
a different country, Funes said.
The day before a group of FMLN supporters
were attacked by followers of the Alianza
Republicana Nacionalista (ARENA) when they
were preparing an activity in the
Metrocentro shopping mall.
They arrived with stones, clubs and pipes
and began beating us, reported to Prensa
Latina activist Felix Antonio Jovel, who was
wounded in the incident.
Several young people were wounded and a car
severely damaged in a new act registered
here only a few days before the presidential
elections on March 15.
Funes denounced local media has been
accusing FMLN of the incidents when a video
tape showed the contrary.
Tension has increased as the Election Day
approaches, warned observers of the European
Union.
There is growing tension, said the head of
the EU mission, Spaniard Luis Yanez Barnuevo
although it has not yet overflowed.
More than 4.2 million Salvadorans should
vote on Sunday and must chose, as president,
between the FMLN candidate and that of
ARENA, Rodrigo Avila in an electoral battle
in which surveys have indicated a possibLE
triumph of Funes. |
