SouthAm Defense Council Opens in Chile
Santiago, Chile - Chilean Defense
Minister Jose Goñi said on Tuesday that the
South American Defense Council (CDS) is not
against anyone, but rather "must be for us,
the South Americans."
At the CDS inauguration ceremony in Santiago
de Chile, Goñi explained that the Council is
a mechanism to generate "our own views,
opinions and action plan in this field."
He warned of effects of international
economic crisis on the region and said that
"tensions and uncertainties not seen since
the Great Depression of the 30s are
undermining worldwide stability."
Goni called on the 12 ministers of the Union
of South American Nations (UNASUR) to
consolidate the region as "an area of peace,
stability and cooperation."
Cooperation is an indispensable tool to face
dilemmas and problems and also to have our
voice heard in the world.
