The Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad
(ICE) says it suspects sabotage against the
institution and not an action by common
criminals as it has to spend some ¢100
million colones between January and March of
this year to replace stolen cable.
ICE officials say that as many as 16.000
people have been affected as cable thefts
have interrupted telephone and electrical
services.
The suspicion of the state agency is that in
the past only cables from poles were being
stolen, now vandals are getting into boxes
of "high calibre".
ICE has already fild 17 cases, twice the
number in the same period last year,
according to Claudio Bermúdez, a
telecommunications manager at ICE.
Bermúdez cited two specific examples, one in
Pavas where vandals interrupted service to
5.000 clients and cost the institution ¢10
million colones and the other in Don Dosco,
south side of Paseo Colon, where cable theft
meant an expenditure of ¢6 million colones
for the replacement.
Erick Jiménez, ICE'slegal advisor, said that
these are not simple random acts of theft
and power or telecommunications cuts, the
vandals are acting with specific knowledge.
ICE's lawyer added that the institution will
be pressing criminal charges, however, the
process is difficult for the lack of
witnesses to the thefts. |
