Coast On Yellow Alert Due To Heavy Rains And
Flooding
While the
major part of the country is bone dry and
water rationing has been announced by the
AyA, the Caribbean coast has been inundated
with rain, which has seen the overflowing of
the banks of the rivers Sixaola and Chirripó
and consequent flooding of the area.
The Comisión Nacional de Emergencias (CNE) -
national emergency commission - has declared
a "yellow" alert for the area and has opened
up two shelters in the event the water
levels continue to rise.
The overflowing of the Sixaola river is also
affecting the area of Bribrí and has cut off
communities. The Chirripó is causing
flooding of communities in Agrodisa and
Matina.
The Instituto Meteorológico Nacional (IMN) -
national weather service - says the
prolonged heavy rains are due to a high
pressure system off the Florida coast.
"The wind intensity has increased, causing
heavy rains. This condition could be
maintained until Wednesday", said Juan Diego
Naranjo of the IMN.
