Dictatorship Minister Jailed in Paraguay

Asunción - Paraguayan humanitarian organizations demanded a judicial process and punishment for former minister Augusto Montanaro, accused of torture during the dictatorship of Alfredo Stroessner.

Montanaro was transferred to the Tacumbu national prison in Asuncion, where he will receive medical attention before being sent to a common cell.

Local media informed that Montanaro was met with protests in Tacumbu by a group of prisoners, victims of the dictatorship.

Montanaro, former Interior Minister, now 86 years old, will be checked at Tacumbu for health problems.

Montanaro left Paraguay after the 1989 coup that overthrew Alfredo Stroessner. He returned to the country on May 1 from Honduras, where he lived for 20 years, and some say as a pastor.
