Biodiversity in Danger
Panama - The Smithsonian Tropical Research
Institute highlighted Panama''s biodiversity
on Thursday.
The Panamanian Science Museum estimates that
there are between 220 and 240 fresh water
species and 1,400 salt water species, and
16,000 of the 165,000 butterfly species
reported in the world, are located here.
Specialists continue to point out that there
are human and natural factors constituting a
danger for this biodiversity, such as water
contamination, commercial fishing and wood
cutting. For this reason sustainable
development is necessary for the survival of
the ecosystem. |
