El Salvador Troops to Fight Crime
San Salvador - The Armed
Forces can and will help the nation fight
organized crime and its malignant offshoot,
drug trafficking, said Salvadorian President Funes.
The president spoke in an event in a
military garrison in his first appearance as
Commander in Chief of the institution and
noted the need for coordination with the
National Police to undertake this task and
broaden their social role.
He pointed out that, aside from this, the
armed forces will act under constitutional
precepts in defense of the nation that is
their raison d'etre.
The Head of State added that the new role of
the military is part of the modernization
and reconstruction of the nation in which
they are called to participate as well as in
humanitarian and solidarity actions.
For them to undertake this role the armed
forces will be honored and supported at all
times and I will know how to provide but
also demand, he added.
For his part the new Defense minister, David
Munguia Payes explained that when the
President decides, plans will be prepared to
define the parameters and tasks to unite
against those scourges of humanity that
threaten the nation.
In his message he underlined that the
differences between the armed forces with
groups and sectors of society have ended,
and now the military should look ahead.
Munguia, who returned from retirement to
work in the ministry, stressed that part of
his task is to maintain institutional unity
and denied the existence of internal unrest
and highlighted examples of respect and
professionalism found in the commands. |
