Amendment Fervor in Venezuela
Caracas - The campaign for
modification of the constitution grows in Venezuela, with just 23
days before the vote.
The referendum will be held on February 15 for the allowal of
continuous reelection of the posts of the President, deputies,
mayors, legislators and governors.
This week, followers and oppositors of President Hugo Chavez went
out to the streets to express their opinion of the proposal, on
which more than 16 million Venezuelans will vote.
In the capital and other cities sectors of the opposition,
especially students, committed violent activities on January 20,
that forced the police to intervene.
The Metropolitan Police of Caracas seized a truck with Molotov
cocktails, stones and gasoline cylinders, and arrested the driver
and 4 students. The students were released later.
President Hugo Chavez said these actions are financed by the US
government, with the objective to cause confrontations.
A total of 25,000 members of public and private working sectors of
the Workers Front marched with red outfits, the color of the United
Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) to celebrate the 51 years of the
overthrow of Venezuelan dictator Marcos Perez Jimenez.
Opponents also held a march to the National Electoral Council, but
there were no confrontations. |
