Bogota - Two new cases
of extra-judicial
executions were
denounced Monday, this
time in the capital and
involving two young men
who had been missing and
were later reported as
dead in combat by the
military.
The secretary of
government in Bogota,
Clara Lopez, told press
the bodies of two men
aged 23 and 31, who had
went missing in
September in Bogota's
Rafael Uribe locality,
were found two days
later in Chivor
municipality, in Boyaca
department.
This coincides with the
cases of eleven young
men reported missing in
the town of Ciudad
Bolivar and Soacha
municipality. They were
found dead in Norte de
Santander department,
and had been reported as
casualties by the
military forces.
The official noted that
in both situations the
modus operandi is the
same.
The cases of
extra-judicial
executions by the
military triggered a
crisis within armed
institutions that
resulted in the
dismissal of 27
officers, including the
resignation of the
military forces chief,
General Mario Montoya.
Human Rights groups and
opposition parties have
repeatedly urged the
government to take
drastic measures, far
beyond the dismissal of
top officers.
They have even asked for
the resignation of
Defense Minister Juan
Manuel Santos, for his
political accountability
in front of what seems
to be a systematic
practice within the
military forces. |
