Road Accidents Up 20% During
Brazil Carnival
Rio de Janeiro - Road accidents during
the just-concluded carnival holiday in Brazil increased 20 percent
compared with 2008 despite the new tougher regulations against drunk
drivers, police said on Thursday.
A total of 2,865 accidents occurred on the country's roads during
the period from Carnival Friday to Ash Wednesday, which claimed 127
lives, down from 128 last year, and injured 1,784 others, up 21
percent from 2008, Federal Highway Police said.
The average rate of drunk drivers on the roads dropped during the
holiday, one per every 16 drivers compared one in every 10 drivers
in 2008.
Minas Gerais state, which has the largest highway network in the
country, registered 471 accidents, in which 21 people died and347
were injured.
It was followed by Santa Catarina state, which had 366 accidents,
with 19 dead and 217 injured, and Rio de Janeiro state, with 267
accidents, 10 deaths and 131 injured.
