Top U.S. Military Officer To
Visit Latin America Next Week
Washintgon - Chairman of U.S. Joint
Chiefs of Staff Mike Mullen said on Thursday he will visit Latin
America next week, including Mexico, which is of concern to him
because of violence and drug trafficking along the U.S.-Mexico
border.
In a joint press conference with U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert
Gates at the Pentagon, Mullen said Mexico "is certainly more than a
concern for me."
Questioned by the press about the increased violence from drug
cartels along the U.S.-Mexico border, the top U.S. military officer
said the United States was concerned by the killings and drug
trafficking, which increased dramatically last year.
Mullen said the U.S. is assessing "ways of helping to deal with this
kind of threat" in Mexico, but gave no further details of his trip.
The Pentagon too has not provided further details of the visit.
