Bolivian Ambassador Urges Peruvian Legislators to Apologize

Lima - The Bolivian ambassador to Peru on Monday urged a Peruvian legislative commission that investigated the activities of a Latin American trade body in Bolivia to apologize for "an intervention in internal issues."

"The congressmen should, through the commission, apologize in this case ... because the visit was an intervention in internal issues ... which is not correct," the ambassador, Franz Solano, said.

The Peruvian commission visited Bolivia last week to investigate the operations of the Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas (ALBA) there, and alleged links to subversive movements in Peru.

The ALBA is a Latin America trade alliance created by Venezuela and Cuba five years ago to advance regional integration while countering U.S. economic influence in the region.

Solano said it was "unadvisable" that a commission from the Peruvian congress had arrived in Bolivia for an "allegedly" official visit, because the Bolivian embassy in Peru had not received any request for such a visit.

The ALBA does not serve to export policies or economic models, but seeks the integration between its member countries, Solano said.

On Friday, Bolivian President Evo Morales criticized the investigation and said he would like to send to Peru his parliamentary men to investigate an alleged U.S. military base.
