Murders Up in 2008, San José
Still The Most Violent
The latest report by the Organismo de Investigacion Judicial (OIJ)
reveals that murders increased last year, the major increase in the
capital.
The report indicates in San José there were 96 murders in 2008,
compared to 63 in 2007. Tibás and Limón also saw a marked increase
going from 17 to 27 and 36 to 48, respectively.
"In comparing cantons there was an increase in the frequency of
cases and their geographic dispersion" says the report.
Although murder was down in some areas, like Goicoechea (east of San
José) where there were only 7 murders in 2008, compared to 29 in
2007, in Curridabat (also east of San José), the number of murders
was down to 3 from 9 and in Pococí the rate dropped to 5 from 16.
According to the OIJ report the most violent provinces coninute to
be San José with 214 homicides and Limón with 75.
Looking at the average number of murders, the average monthly number
increased to 36 or 1.2 daily in 2008, up from 29 or 9.6 daily in
2007. |
