Another 140 Join The
Unemployment Line Due To Financial Crisis
Another 140 people have made the list of the unemployed or to be
employed as the company, Sábila Industrial, located in Liberia,
closed its plant without notice and without paying its employees
severance pay nor the salaries for the second half of January,
according to the ministerio de Trabajo.
The viceminister of Labour, Eugenio Solano, confirmed that the
company, who specialized in the production of Aloe Vera products,
closed up on January 30, without notice or compensation to its
employees.
"We are giving this case special attention. The employees have filed
a formal complaint and are asking for the confiscation of the
company's assets", said Solano.
The company operated within a free zone called "zona franca" and
exported its products to the United States.
Earlier this month, the drug manufacturer Merck, Sharp & Dome
announced the closure of its plant in Pavas, leaving some 200
without work by the end of the year.
The Sylvania company, which manufactures light bulbs and lighting
equipment, also in Pavas, across the street from Merck, announced
the closure of one of its two plants, affecting another 200
employees.
At the end of January, the Domino's Pizza franchisee in Costa Rica
shut its doors without notice, putting out to the unemployment line
130 people.
Only the Sylvania closure is a direct result of the market slowdown
in the US, as the company cuts back on costs and operations
worldwide. Merck officials said that the closure is not related to
the financial crisis, rather to a scaling down of the company that
started a couple of years back.
As to the Dominos closure, there is still no reason or explanation
from the Mexican owners of the franchise as to the closure.
