ICE Will Soon Have Competition In Telephone Services

The Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) will soon have competition. The newly created Superintendencia de Telecomunicaciones (Sutel) - telecommunications board - confirmed that Ticom, Amnet, ICANN, WorldCom, InterTel Worldwise and R&H International Telecom, have all expressed an interest in opening up the Costa Rican telecom industry.

ICE is currently the sole provider of telecommunications in Costa Rica and until the end of last year had a 80 year monopoly in the country.

With the passing of the Ley General de Telecommunicaciones and the creation of the Sutel, the country is entering an era of competitive telecommunications.

The process of evaluating the applications will commence next week.

Companies like Amnet already operate in Costa Rica, providing cable television and cable internet (in conjunction with Racsa, an ICE company) to residential and commercial customers, while the others will be new to the Costa Rican market, interested in providing cellular and fixed line telephone services, as well as internet and other telecommunications services.
