Panama Discussing Trade Deal
with Canada
Panama - Negotiations on a
trade agreement between Panama and Canada included broad
consultations with the civil society, environmental groups, labor
unions and ordinary people, official sources said.
According to the Ministry of Trade and Industries (MICI), opinions
will be taken into consideration to design the steps to be taken in
the talks on an unrestricted trade deal.
Leroy Sheffer, head of the Panamanian negotiating team, pointed out
that those actions are fundamental "in defining a working strategy
with broad technical consensus."
"It means going deep into the standards that the agreement would
establish regarding environmental issues for both partners, as well
as delimiting appropriately how this agreement could benefit
national consumers," he noted.
The consultations included the agricultural guilds, the associations
of Businesspeople and Food Suppliers and of Free Consumers, as well
as the National Environmental Authority, among other institutions. |
