Candidates Must Share The Cost of Convention, PLN Party Says

Becoming a presidential candidate for the Partido Liberación Nacional (PLN) is not cheap, especially as the party does not have the money to hold the national convention to pick its candidate come June 7.

As such the party's executive committee, headed by Francisco Antonio Pacheco, said it will raise the entrance fee to to ¢37.5 million colones (us$67.500) from the original ¢30 million for the four declared candidates.

Former vice-president, Laura Chinchilla; San Jose's mayor, Johnny Araya; former security minister, Fernando Berrocal'; and Carlos Francisco Echeverría, are seeking the nomination to head the party into the presidential elections on Sunday 07 February 2010.

Pacheco explained that the convention will cost ¢150 million colones and that in the beginning there would be five candidates. However, now that there are four, each will have to ante up a little more to meet the cost of the convention.

José Francisco Herrera had declared his intention to run for the party nomination to be disputed by five. But last minute Herrera decided to drop out leaving only four which are expected to formally submit their nomination to the Tribunal Interno de Elecciones del PLN by February 15.

"We had an agreement that all the candidates would cover the ¢150 million cost of the convention. We believe that the right thing is for each of the four candidates to cover the cost of the the non-participant. It is a question of party solidarity", said Pacheco.
