Construction of Temporary Homes
For Earthquake Victims Begins Today
Today the Comisión de Reconstrucción del Poder Ejecutivo will begin
the construction of temporary housing for the affected of the
January 8 earthquake. The co-ordinator of the Comisión, Marco Vargas
Díaz, confirmed the news while visiting the shelter camp in Poasito.
Vargas said that he hopes that before the end of the week the first
families will be leaving the shelter and into the new temporary
housing which will include all the necessities of living.
Some 200 crews made up mainly of volunteers will be working in the
construction of the temporary homes, which are expected to be raised
within 2 days and located in the area of Poasito and Fraijanes.
The camps where the temporary homes will be built will have a common
area for cooking, laundry, sanitation and a medical clinic, using
modified trucks to house those basic necessities.
The ministra de Salud, María Luisa Ávila, said the transfer from the
shelters to the camps is the first step in the government's plant to
house those displaced by the earthquake.
The government has promised up to 500 new homes which will begin
construction once the temporary home efforts have been completed.
Once all the people have moved out of the shelters, minister Ávila
said the shelters would be used for emergency services.
