Near 3000 Brazil Labor Deaths a Year

Brasilia - Close to 3,000 Brazilians die per year in work related accidents, revealed statistics of Social Prevention released to mark the World Work Safety and Health Day.

The figures also demonstrate that, in 2007, there were 653,090 work accidents registered, far higher than the 512,232 of the year before although there are no reports regarding the type of injuries.

On the other hand, according to the coordinator of the Tripartite Commission of Health and Safety of Work, Remigio Todeschni, labor accidents cost 42 billion reales (about 18.5 billion dollars, which represents 1.8 percent of the Brazilian Gross National Product.

According to members of this state commission one of the main challenges is to prepare professionals to identify work-related complaints and accidents, which from 2006 to 2008 the number of reports increased 152 percent.
