Guatemala Fights Children Malnutrition
Guatemala - Guatemala has developed a pilot plan to
decrease children''s chronic malnutrition
among the poor. President Alvaro Colom
administration has chosen four
municipalities in the eastern department of
Chiquimula to first implement the project.
According to official reports, Guatemala is
ranking first in Latin America and sixth in
the world among the countries with the
highest malnutrition rates among
five-year-old children.
The pilot plan includes promoting mother
breastfeeding until the baby is at least six
month old.
All children under five will be supplied a
nutritional supplement and micronutrients as
well as pregnant women.
It also envisages the introduction of
productive projects to improve community
economy, while the Education Ministry will
implement programs such as the Cuban
teaching method Yo, si puedo to fight
illiteracy. |
