Nicaragua Labour for Minimum Wage Deal
Managua - Nicaraguan workers proposed a minimum wage
initiative in the private sector to prevent
arriving at the May 1 celebration without an
agreement, a union leader announced. Roberto
Gonzalez of the Sandinista Workers Central
said that they present it as an alternative
for a tripartite agreement that establishes
eight percent for small and medium companies
and 15 percent for the other sectors of the
economy.
Nicaraguan workers will gather on April 30
in a central plaza of the capital with the
announced presence of President Daniel
Ortega to celebrate their day.
The business sector proposed a bill to the
local parliament to freeze worker's salaries
that, in the opinion of Gonzalez, is an
attempt at politicking and a bad way to gain
advantages.
Blaming the business sectors for blocking
the agreements, the union leader pointed out
that in preparation for May 1 they demand
fair and rapid negotiations.
We do not want to continue debates after the
international worker's celebration, he
pointed out.
For several months workers and private
business have been embroiled in a debate on
the modification of the law that sets a
minimum wage twice a year.
The business sector claim that debates on
salary should only be once a year and have
set wage increases that are unacceptable to
the unions. |
