Train Women In Proper Use Of Female Condom
The Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social (CCSS)
- Costa Rica's social security - has
undertaken the task of teaching women how to
correctly use a female condom. During the
coming months the Caja will give training
classes to women who show a high risk of
contracting a sexually transmitted disease
(STD).
The most frequent STD is siphyllis according
to Caja records, when in 2007 198 women were
diagnosed with the STD.
Caja doctor, Gloria Terwes, who is also co-ordinating
the program, explained that the goal is to
reach sex social workers (prostitutes), as
well as housewives of men infected with an
STD, and women who have been raped.
Terwes explained that the condom provides a
barrier of protection between male and femal
genitals, protecting against the
transmission of HIV, Human Papilloma, Herpes
and other STDs.
Terwes added that although the Caja has the
female condoms in its warehouse, it will not
begin distribution until the women have
taken the training course on its proper use.
"Putting one on is simple, but it has to be
learned", said Dr. Terwes, adding that the
Caja wants to be assured of the proper use
by fortalizing motivation and habits.
The female condoms will be distributed by
the Caja free of charge.
