Panama, Canada for Trade Meeting
Panama - Panama and
Canadian work groups are preparing for a
ministerial meeting aimed at a bilateral
free trade agreement, informed official
sources.
Severo Sousa, Foreign Trade vice minister,
indicated that the contacts are "moving at a
good rate that we consider very positive to
prepare for greater discussion at the
ministerial level."
After the fourth Round of negotiations in
Canada we achieved significant advances that
should be reflected in the texts that we are
using as a basis for these conversations, he
added.
For his part, Leroy Sheffer, head of the
Panamanian negotiation team pointed out that
at the recent meeting in Ottawa the country
maintained the positions required by the
productive sector, above all in those that
are sensitive lines.
This is a view that Canada is well aware of
and understands as an idea of promoting a
climate of negotiations that benefit both
our markets, he added.
Negotiations began formally in October of
2008 with four rounds held to date. The next
meeting could be at ministerial level at a
date still pending.
Trade between Canada and Panama surpassed
800 million dollars in 2008 with an
important participation of the Free Zone of
Colon, as well as participation in financial
exchange and investments.
