Rio de Janeiro - Brazil's Foreign Minister
Celso Amorim said on Monday that Cuba's
absence in the Organization of American
States (OAS) is an "anomaly" which must be
corrected.
The minister's statement was made during a
visit to Rio, where he commented on the
absence of Cuban representatives in the
fifth Summit of the Americas, which will
take place from April 17 to 19 in Trinidad
and Tobago.
Cuba, which was expelled from the OAS in
1962, will be the only country in the
continent without any representatives at the
summit.
Amorim said all the countries in the
American continent, except El Salvador and
the United States, maintain both commercial
and diplomatic relations with Cuba.
Several leaders of Latin American and
Caribbean countries have stated that they
will use the Summit to press U.S. President
Barack Obama to end the U.S. embargo to
Cuba, which already lasts 47 years.
