Nicaragua and Russia have forged an
agreement of understanding that grants
Nicaraguan shrimp and fish exports greater
access to the Russian market.
The agreement was signed in Managua by the
head of the Nicaraguan Agricultural and
Forest Ministry, Ariel Bucardo, and the head
of the Russian mission visiting the country,
Yevgeny Dubrovin, an official source
reported to EFE.
Bucardo highlighted it as “a groundbreaking
event” in that “a powerful country” like
Russia values the Central American country’s
sanitary system for shellfish production.
During the two-week visit, the Russian
delegates inspected local factories and
laboratories to certify the quality of
Nicaraguan shrimp and fish.
“They came to inspect our plants and
laboratories and left satisfied,” said the
governmental source. As a result, exporters
interested in doing business with Russia
need only present a certification from the
General Directorate of Agricultural Health
and the Agricultural and Forest Ministry, he
added.
Nicaragua considers Russia a valuable
destination for its fish and shellfish, in
allowing it to diversify away from
"traditional mainstay markets.”
Meanwhile, Dubrovin confirmed the companies
inspected in Nicaragua fulfill the required
standards needed to place their shrimp and
fish in the Russian market.
Russia has the capacity to buy “thousands of
tonnes of shelllfish products” from
Nicaragua, the delegate highlighted.
Nicaraguan exports to Russia totalled USD
6.21 million in 2008, whereas a year before
USD 9.06 million had been generated from the
relationship, Centre of Exports Processing (CETREX)
figures show.
