Santiago - Visiting
Chilean President Michelle Bachelet rejected
on Friday the use of protectionism as away
to tackle the current international economic
crisis, according to information reaching
here from Moscow.
Speaking at a seminar on investment in the
Russian capital, Bachelet said the ongoing
crisis could be overcome without taking
protectionist measures including higher
duties or subsidies.
The right way is to "keep the market open,"
she said.
It is more necessary than ever to eliminate
all kind of tariff barriers given the
magnitude of the current global economic
slump, she added.
During her stay in Russia, the Chilean
president also met with Moscow Mayor Yuri
Luzhkov and gave a speech in the State
University of International Affairs of
Russia, where she received an honorary
doctorate.
