Another Six Million
People To Be
Impoverished In Latin America, SELA Warns
Caracas - The global
economic crisis will increase the amount of
poor people in Latin America and the
Caribbean by another six million, SELA
warned on Wednesday.
Over six million people will be impoverished
due to this crisis, adding to the 190
million poor people already existing in the
region, said Jose Rivera Banuet, permanent
secretary of the Latin American and
Caribbean Economic System (SELA).
Rivera made the remarks in a regional
seminary of SELA on U.S. and Latin America
economic ties in the crisis.
The exports of Latin America and the
Caribbean have been reduced due to global
demand contraction, Rivera said.
Many Latin American countries have
devaluated their currencies to face the
crisis, which is another cause of the
increase, he said.
Rivera said that U.S. should continue to
finance Latin America and the Caribbean in
the multilateral banks and to restore the
credit in the region with favorable
condition.
Rivera also asked the upcoming G20 Summit to
take into account the interests of the
developing countries, especially Latin
America and the Caribbean.
