Cuba to Support Honduras
Literacy Drive
TEGUCIGALPA - Cuban
teachers will share
their expertise with
their Honduran peers
working in the National
Literacy Program in the
Central American
country.
According to Honduras´
Education Minister
Marlon Breve, 120
professors from the
Caribbean island will
train local teachers on
implementation of the
the Cuban teaching
method "Yo Si Puedo".
The aid is part of the
agreements signed in the
context of the
Bolivarian Alternative
for the Peoples of Our
America (ALBA), an
initiative Honduras
recently joined,
underlined Breve.
"The agreement is giving
us the opportunity to
bring 120 additional
Cuban advisors who will
add to the 60 that are
already here", the
Honduran minister
specified.
The National Literacy
Program will be covering
more communities by Oct.
15, with a bigger
commitment from the
Honduras Education
ministry.
According to ministry,
the illiteracy rate has
declined from 20 to 16,5
percent since 2004,
thanks to the support
given by non government
organizations and the
implementation of the "Yo
Si Puedo" method.
However, he said that
there are still 750,000
young people over 15
years of age and adults
who do not know how to
read and write.
In Honduras, only 32 out
of 100 students pass
elementary-grade level. |
