Canadian Police Donates Body Armour
Ten officers of the Fuerza Pública's Policia Aeroportuaria (airport police unit) assigned to the Daniel Oduber international airport in Liberia now have much needed body armour courtesy of Ontario's Peel Regional Police.

The donation was made possible through the efforts of Peel Regional Police Sergeant Lonny Blackett (ret.) who spent time in the Costa Rica in 2007.

During his trip, Sgt. Blackett became acquainted with several officers who he noticed were poorly equipped, including many that patrolled the airport without body armour.

Sgt. Blackett immediately undertook to see what he could do to help the officers and before long, ten serviceable used vests were collected.

Realizing that fellow officers in Costa Rica would greatly benefit from the equipment, Chief Mike Metcalf and his management team approved the request to donate the vests, which were originally scheduled to be destroyed.

In July, the vests were delivered to the officers, who were extremely grateful for the gift. In his letter of thanks, Captain Otto Jiminez of the Policia Aeroportuaria sent his "sincere thanks" to Peel Police for providing his officers with the life-saving equipment.

In approving the donation, Chief Metcalf stated; "I am pleased with the opportunity to assist our colleagues in Costa Rica. This equipment will help keep them safe as they serve their community."
