Partial Closing Starting
Tonight
Beginning tonight the
autopista Próspero
Fernández (San José -
Santa Ana highway) will
be partially closed -
one lane in each
direction - every night
to allow the expansion
of the highway to
continue.
The partial closure in
the areas around the
Tiribí river and the
toll booths at Escazú
from 8pm to 5am, save on
Fridays when the partial
closure will be at 10pm.
The work being carried
out on the highway is
part of the autopista to
Caldera. The Autopistas
del Sol has the contract
to widen the San José -
Santa Ana portion from
the current four lanes
to six lanes.
The work includes the
expansion of a number of
bridges along the
highway - unlike when
the autopista General
Cañas was expanded to
six lanes though bridges
continue as four lanes -
the removal of the
concrete barriers along
the highway and tons of
earth moving to allow
the highway expansion.
At Guachipelin, for
months machinery has
been busy removing tons
of rock.
Álvaro Muelas, general
manager of Autopistas
del Sol, said that the
company decided to work
at night to disrupt
daytime traffic as
little as possible.
During the past month
congestion between the
Escazú to the
Circunvalación has been
a nightmare with the
temporary lane closures.
Muelas added that the
area has signs posted
warning traffic of the
closure and to slow down
and is expecting to have
a Tránsito (traffic)
police presence.
An alternative to
avoiding the
construction is the use
of the "carretera vieja"
old road to Santa Sana
that weaves through
Escazú and Santa Ana |
