Guatemalans Want Cuban 5

GUATEMALA - The
Coordinator of
Solidarity with Cuba and
several Guatemalan
organizations are
preparing Thursday a
sit-in in front of the
US embassy to demand the
release of five Cuban
anti-terrorist fighters
unfairly imprisoned in
that northern country.
The rally will take
place September 12, the
day that marks 10 years
of imprisonment of those
men, who tried to impede
terrorist actions
against their people,
the Coordinator member
Mayra Godoy told Prensa
Latina.
A release from that
entity recalls some
aggressions suffered by
the Cuban Revolution,
among them, the
explosion in mid-air of
a Cuban airplane that
killed 73 people, a
machine-gun attack on
the island's coasts, and
bombings of tourist
sites.
US authorities, instead
of trying those groups,
protect them like the
case of confessed
terrorist Luis Posada
Carriles, and keep in
prison these men with
cruel treatments, the
group states.
Fernando Gonzalez,
Gerardo Hernandez, Rene
Gonzalez, Ramon Labanino
and Antonio Guerrero
were detained in 1998,
subjected to a trial
full of irregularities,
and condemned to harsh
sentences, and an
international movement
for their freedom has
been created.
The Anti-Imperialist
Bloc, the University of
San Carlos students'
coordinator, the
National Front of
Struggle, and the Rural
Unit Committee, among
other organizations, are
expected to attend the
sit-in. |
