Nicaragua Denounces US Destabilization Plan
Washington - Nicaragua accused the US Department of State and OAS Secretary General Jose Miguel Insulza of promoting a destabilization plan to overthrow the Sandinista government.

The Nicaraguan permanent mission at the Organization of American States (OAS) made the denunciation in this capital on Thursday.

With that attitude, they not only try to destabilize our government, but are also determined to influence and not recognize, at all cost, our municipal elections on November 9, the text says.

Nicaraguan authorities noted that in the elections, citizens freely expressed their preference for the candidates of the Sandinista Front, which is on the lead, according to preliminary results, in 91 of 146 town halls where elections were held.

Nicaragua also accused Washington and Insulza of taking an interfering stance when each of them issued a communiqué echoing the opposition's distortions and lies about the recent elections.

The Nicaraguan Government pointed out that it is unacceptable that the OAS secretary general has joined this destabilizing plan that violates the principles of the Charter that the institutions of the Nicaraguan State are defending, adds the note.

The text adds that Insulza is trying to ignore Article 23 of the Inter-American Democratic Charter, according to which Member States are responsible for organizing and guaranteeing free and fair elections, and they have the sovereign right to ask for international observers or not.

After condemning Washington's interference, the Sandinista government warned that the OAS secretary general is abusing his functions by taking a stance against Nicaragua without a resolution by that regional organization.
